There are many pyramids in Mexico and even the world’s largest pyramid known as the Great Pyramid of Cholula is in Mexico. Along with pyramids, Mexico has many ceremonial temples, observatories and monuments from many different cultures as well. Mexico is a place of much-developed civilizations in the western hemisphere. Here is the list of some of the important pyramids in Mexico though there is a lot of terrains yet to be explored and dug up,

1.El Castillo, Chichen Itza- Kukulkan temple
The pyramid is located in the municipality of Tinicum of the Mexican state of Yucatán comes in the archaeological site of Chichen Itza which is an ancient Maya city. Chichen Itza means “At the mouth of the well of the Itza.” is also one of the largest Mayan cities and also termed as the mythical city. It is believed that the site has been built because of the location of two large natural sinkholes that can provide them water all year round. The Castillo is in the shape of a pyramid that stands at 30 metres (98 ft) high and has a total of nine square terraces which is approximately and has a 6-metre (20 ft) high temple situated upon the summit.

2.Pyramid of the sun – Tenochtitlan
The Pyramid of the sun is the largest building in the Teotihuacan and also one of the largest in Mesoamerica. The place dominates the central city from each side of the Avenue of the Dead. The hieght of the pyramid is 66 metres (216 feet) above the ground level and total area of the base is 220 by 230 metres (720 by 760 feet). The north end of the dead is known as the Pyramid of the Moon and has a hieght of 43 meters (140 feet) and the base measures approximately 130 by 156 meters (426 by 511 feet). The third structure is the Temple of the Feathered Serpent and the third largest pyramid in the Teotihuacan.

3.Nichos Pyramid – El Tajin
El Tajin is an old pre-Columbian archaeological site situated in southern Mexico and it is one of the finest and the largest and most important cities of the Classic era of Mesoamerica. The city developed from 600 to 1200 CE and it has built multiple palaces, pyramids and ballcourts. The most important ruin is the Pyramid of the Niches which is 20 meters tall and has 7 stepped terraces that lead to the top. All the four sides are covered with stacked rows of small niches formed from blocks of stone. It is believed that the pyramid is kind of an astronomical calendar to track the days of the year.

4.Temple of the Inscriptions – Palenque
Temple of the Inscriptions is also known as “House of the Nine Sharpened Spears” is the largest Mesoamerican stepped pyramid of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. It is located in the modern-day state of Chiapas, Mexico. The structure was dedicated to the as a funerary monument for K’inich Janaab’ Pakal who is a ruler of Palenque in the 7th century and total tenure lasted for almost 70 years. The construction of the site has been commenced in the last stage of the reign and later completed by his son and successor K’inich Kan B’alam II. The structure is very useful in the study of the ancient Maya with the ancient impressive sculptural panels.

5.Nohoch Mul Pyramid – Coba
Nohoch Mul Pyramid is the tallest Mayan Mayan pyramid with a hieght of 137-feet tall and the second tallest Mayan pyramid in the world. The pyramid is located in the archaeological site of Cobá of the Mexican state. The pyramid was discovered in the 1800s and it was not open to the public because of thick jungle area was too difficult to reach. This is one of the most popular sites on the Yucatan Peninsula. One of the main structure of Coba has engravings that suggest population growth to about 55,000 people between A.D. 800 and 1100.

6.Calakmul´s Great Pyramid – Campeche
Calakmul also is known as Calakmul is a Maya archaeological site located in the Mexican state of Campeche. The region has around 6,750 ancient structures and the largest one being the Calakmul´s Great Pyramid which is around 45 metres (148 ft) high making it one of the tallest pyramids of the Mayan civilization. The pyramid has four tombs which are mostly covered with residential structures in a span of 20 square kilometres.

7.Pyramid of the Magician – Uxmal
Piramide del Avidino is also known as the Pyramid of the Dwarf, Casa el Adivino, and the Pyramid of the Soothsayer. This is a popular Mesoamerican step pyramid situated in the ancient Pre-Columbian city of Uxmal, Mexico. The pyramid is the tallest and one of the most attractive structures in the Uxmal region. The region was home to approximately 25,000 Maya and just like other regions, it developed from 600-1000 AD. The name of teh region Uxmal means ‘thrice built’ in the Mayan language that refers to the many layers of the construction.

8.Monte Albán – Oaxaca
Monte Albán is the ancient ruins of the Zapotec and Mixtec culture situated in the Oaxaca state, Mexico. It is believed that the initial construction of the site has been started in at circa 8th century BCE. The region has great plazas, truncated pyramids and approximately 170 tombs. The great plaza is at the highest hill and flanked by four platforms with two temples stand on the platform to the south.

9.Great Pyramid of La Venta
The great Pyramid of La Venta lies in the central building in the city layout of La Venta. It is constructed entirely from clay and can be seen from far away. It is developed in a closed in the platform and that is the reason it is discovered after Altars 2 and 3. It is believed that the structure is around 394 +/- 30 BCE. One of the oldest pyramids of Mesoamerica is around 110 ft (34 m) high and contains an estimated 100,000 cubic meters of earth fill. The current shape of the pyramid is because of 2500 years of erosion.

10.Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl, Tula
The pyramid of Quetzalcoatl is also known as the Temple of Quetzalcoatl and the Feathered Serpent Pyramid. This is the third-largest pyramid situated in the Teotihuacan, a pre-Columbian site in central Mexico (the term Teotihuacan, or Teotihuacan. The pyramid was discovered in the year 1980s and it is dating back to between 150 and 200 CE. The modern-day name of the structure is “Temple of the Feathered Serpent”.
